The Story of Grace Baptist Church
Our story began in 1964 when Pastor Jack Dean, his wife Maxine, and daughter Jackie left a thriving ministry in Texas to pastor a small church meeting in a house in the newly planned community of Bowie, Maryland. A small rancher on Belair Drive and Shelter Lane served as the first chapel for Grace Baptist Church in 1964.
God was at work and we outgrew the little rancher and decided to purchase the house behind it as well. Soon both houses would be bursting at the seams with every available space being used for classes and ministries. We then began to seek a new property which would lead us to our current location on Race Track Road in Bowie.
In 1965, ground was broken and in 1966, just six months later, the building was dedicated. Over the next 13 years Grace continued to thrive and the message of Jesus Christ crucified, risen and coming again was faithfully preached. Our ministries were reaching the community and the church continued to make disciples who loved and served the Lord.
In December of 1979 Pastor Jack Dean went home to be with the Lord. This was a shocking and sorrowful time for the church, but again God was faithful in providing a team of pastors that would lead the church into the future.
Pastor David Price served as senior pastor of the church for the next 27 years. He led the church through a season of great influence in the community and through multiple building expansion projects. The church also became passionate about reaching the world for Christ through global missions.
In 2008, Pastor Steve Lane became the third senior pastor of Grace. His leadership and compassion for people helped us to continue to spread the gospel message in our community through various support groups that offer healing and hope to those in need.
Today, Grace continues to glorify God by making fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ. We want to be known as a disciple-making church. Our vision today is to see Christ followers living a life of worship, a life on mission, a life of service, and doing life together with the Family of God. We invite you to be a part of our family. We are excited to see what God will do in and through Grace for years to come.
